What brought you to Gifford Fitness in the first place?

I was introduced to GiffyFit by my friend Amy and husband Bill. Previously I had been running and doing yoga. I went with Amy to a different CrossFit Gym and hated it, so when Amy told me about becoming a GiffyFit founding member I was not interested, but Bill was and he got started. After listening to Bill and Amy rave about it for a year, I decided to give the first Fit Camp (now Kickstart) a try. That was about  four and a half years ago!

What was your first impression? How has that changed?

I found out that I was not as fit as I thought I was. I did the “Baseline” and thought I might die. It really showed me that I had only a certain level of fitness and wasn’t in the best possible shape that I could be

What was your first “bright spot” or big achievement at the gym?

When I did my first rope climb I was pretty proud of myself!

What are you working on now at the gym? Where is your focus?

I am working on upper body strength in relation to having a shoulder repair.  It will forever limit things that I will be able to do with that arm, but I no longer have random dislocations so I will take that trade! Push ups are something I am able to do and am working on. Improving them will overall help my shoulder stability.

When you’ve hit road bumps in your normal workout routine (like shoulder surgery) what’s driven you to keep going to classes?

The people at the gym are always what keeps me going. I LOVE the people here. I know that when I come to the gym I will always be challenged but I will always laugh and I will always leave feeling good about myself.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell the Mae of 1-2 years ago?

You are going to go through the most challenging time of your life and with the support of your friends and family and your hard work, you are going to make it.

What would you tell the version of Mae before she started?

Don't concern yourself with what you cannot do.  Focus on what you CAN do and look to make progress on things you find difficult. Small gains are not small. They are gains. Also, twinning gym outfits can be a win all on their own.
